AUSTRALIA | Visy has invested AUD 30 million in a new 2.8-metre-wide corrugator at its Smithfield board factory in Western Sydney, a major upgrade to the recycling and manufacturing supersite.
Using advanced tech like real-time monitoring and digital process optimisation, the corrugator means faster production and changeovers, lifting board output by 33 percent.
It also delivers more consistent board performance, with improved strength and flatness supporting high-speed packing lines and shelf-ready packaging applications.
“Our investment at Smithfield helps to secure a local, secure supply chain for the agricultural and food and beverage sectors,” said Mark De Wit, Visy’s Chief Executive Officer.
“We’ve been making cardboard boxes for farmers and food and beverage brands at Smithfield for over 40 years. This investment secures a reliable supply of high-quality cardboard packaging that meets demand across the state.”
The corrugator heats, shapes, and bonds paper layers to create corrugated cardboard, then cuts it to shape and prepares it to be made into a box.
The Smithfield super site hosts Australia’s largest material recovery facility, two 100 percent recycled paper mills, a cardboard box manufacturing site, and a recycled plastics facility, making it New South Wales's largest recycling precinct. The site supports over 400 full-time jobs.
The site is one of 18 cardboard box facilities across Australia and New Zealand, backed by locally manufactured kraft and 100 percent recycled paper to support a secure, reliable supply chain.
With integrated design, engineering, and customer support teams, this network gives customers the scale, flexibility, and expertise to deliver everything from bespoke packaging to high-volume production.
