An important freight and logistics hub for Christchurch and the wider South Island, Dakota Park offers more than 50,000 square metres of logistics and warehousing facilities.
With direct access to the airfield, a dedicated freight apron, and the road network, it has helped reduce handling and transfer times, particularly for time-sensitive freight such as fresh produce, e-commerce, parcel deliveries, and critical supplies.
Located at the airport are both major operators and smaller logistics businesses, which, combined with Christchurch’s domestic and international air connections, have allowed Dakota Park to support efficient distribution across local and trans-Tasman supply chains.
According to Sean Tully, Strategic Communications Manager, Christchurch International Airport, freight facilities have become larger and more sophisticated as operators accommodate automation and new materials-handling systems. Businesses have also placed greater emphasis on sustainability and flexibility, with buildings and sites needing to adapt as these models evolve.
“Dakota Park has been built with space to accommodate the expansion of current operators and anticipated growth in the sector for decades to come. Efficient connections to the airfield and road network are also critical to reducing handling, travel time and cost,” said Tully.
“The industrial market is also becoming more varied. While some businesses remain very cost-focused, others place greater emphasis on building quality, transport connections and being part of a high-quality campus that reflects their brand.”
With direct access to State Highway 1, the entire air freight precinct is accessible without having to navigate around the passenger terminal. All stakeholders are close by, including forwarders, airlines, MPI and customs.
As the passenger market expands, Tully said more export markets will become accessible directly, with produce able to reach markets, restaurants, and supermarket shelves within 18 hours of departure from Christchurch Airport.
