Kerry x Monell Stephen Manheimer Scholarship In Flavour Science

Kerry Group and the Monell Chemical Senses Centre inaugurate the Stephen Manheimer Scholarship in Flavour Science

USA | Kerry Group and the Monell Chemical Senses Centre are honouring the significant contributions of Stephen Manheimer during his 60-year career with the establishment of a scholarship.

The scholarship is intended to support the next generation of flavour scientists in advancing the understanding of essential aspects of taste perception, bridging research perspectives
from academia and industry, to drive discovery and real-world applications.

Stephen Manheimer has been recognised for his pivotal role in the development of his family company, J. Manheimer Inc., and for his key contributions to Kerry Group’s success in becoming a global leader in the taste industry over the past two decades.

Over that entire period, he has been widely recognised across the industry for his expertise, passion and keen interest in critical scientific advances within the field.

He first became associated with Monell in the early 1970s. He joined Monell’s International Advisory Council (IAC) in 2001 and Monell’s Board in 2018, where he has continued to serve.

Through his longstanding service on the IAC and the Board, as well as his generous philanthropy, Manheimer has fostered a long and deep relationship with the Monell Centre, providing sage counsel and support that has enabled Monell to become a world leader in sensory science and scholarship.

Monell has played a key role in supporting advances in flavour science, as the world’s only independent, non-profit scientific institute dedicated to interdisciplinary basic research on the senses of taste and smell.

Research at the centre has focused on the cellular and genetic underpinnings of taste and smell, as well as the complex interactions between chemical senses and overall human health and well-being.

Kerry has a long history of successfully commercialising new flavour science, bringing to market innovations that serve key consumer needs. For example, its TasteSense technology enables a significant reduction in the salt and sugar content of everyday foods while maintaining consumer-preferred taste.

The Manheimer Scholarship is designed for students pursuing a Master’s or Doctoral Degree in flavour science with an expressed interest in pursuing a career in the flavour or food industry. It provides for up to two years of study.

Funding is intended to cover tuition, a research stipend, and expenses related to executing a research project at the Monell Centre under the guidance of a faculty member.
