SWITZERLAND | Tetra Pak’s aseptic carton package with a paper-based barrier launched in collaboration with Lactogal was recognised as a breakthrough innovation in sustainable packaging.
Tetra Pak has received the ‘Resource Efficiency’ Award at the Sustainable Packaging News Awards 2024 for its paper-based barrier material innovation. The awards recognised the most innovative advancements in sustainable packaging over the past year.
A world-first in the carton packaging industry, the paper-based barrier, combined with plant-based polymers, has reduced the carbon footprint of aseptic food packaging by up to one-third while maintaining the highest standards of food safety and performance. The Carbon Trust has verified the achievement of carbon reduction.
As global food systems call for low-carbon renewable materials, the packaging industry has sought alternatives to the aluminium foil layer, representing a food protection source against oxygen and light.
By replacing this layer with a paper-based barrier, the paperboard in Tetra Pak’s cartons has increased to approximately 80 percent, helping to reduce the package's carbon footprint.
When combined with plant-based polymers, the paper-based barrier has increased an aseptic carton's total share of renewable content by up to 90 percent.
