Planet Reuse, a non-profit platform, showcased its Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWD) draft in the hope of combating excessive waste.

At Empack 2024, the European platform showcased innovative ways to reuse packaging and presented a dynamic platform where solution providers and those interested in solutions can actively engage and contribute, fostering a sense of collective responsibility.

The first draft of the PPWD set its sights high, choosing to be ambitious about future sustainability goals. Marcel Keuenhof, sustainability packaging expert at Planet Reuse, stated that people are more likely to succeed with higher targets, inspiring companies to strive for a more sustainable future.

Over the last six months, Planet Reuse has experienced remarkable growth, increasing from 100 members to 2000. Interest in reusability has surged across Europe, with several countries implementing legislation that forces companies to consider sustainable packaging. This paints a promising picture for the future of waste reduction.

Planet Reuse launched a new programme called ‘Reuse Goes Further’ that will target Central and Eastern European countries. The program will raise awareness of the benefits of well-run reuse systems while influencing European national policy cycles to shape legal incentives.

The infrastructure and financing models of reusing packaging will also be key centre points of Reuse Goes Further, accelerating the transition from single-use to reuse.

The New European Reuse Alliance represents businesses, closely collaborating with partners and combining capabilities to achieve results.
