Creating A Circular Economy Together

Addressing recycling challenges in New Zealand for beverage cartons, Tetra Pak, a global leader in food and beverage processing and packaging, is making substantial strides to make this process easier.

Cartons are not included in kerbside recycling in New Zealand. However, beverage cartons, commonly used to package soy, almond, oat and other plant milk, long-life milk and juice products, can be locally recycled in New Zealand.

Tetra Pak's commitment to sustainability has led to partnering with saveBOARD to create an alternative local recycling solution that turns food and beverage cartons into low-carbon timber replacement building materials.

Sustainability Director for Tetra Pak in Oceania, Vikas Ahuja, said Tetrapak's goal was not only to provide innovative food manufacturing and packaging solutions but also to address what happens when its products reach end-of-life.

"Each board saves more than 500 used beverage cartons from landfills on average," said Ahuja.

"In New Zealand, we are excited to collaborate with saveBOARD to give our cartons a second life as building materials, which in turn is keeping more valuable material in use within our economy."

To ensure that Kiwis can recycle their food and beverage cartons, Tetra Pak and saveBOARD have developed an interactive online map that shows all the 68 drop-off locations across the country where you can take your cartons.

By using this map and returning your used cartons, everyone can help recycle and create a better future for Aotearoa.

"We believe that sustainability needs collaboration across the entire value chain, and our partnership with saveBOARD is a testament to this. We want to keep empowering New Zealanders to act and contribute to a circular economy together."
