Vowing to Break New Ground

The Alternative Proteins Council has received an application from Vow Group to approve cultured quail to the Australia New Zealand food regulatory agency.

This endeavor from Vow’s to produce alternative proteins has broken new ground in regard to the development and production of cell-cultivated quail. Alternative Proteins Council executive, Jennifer Thompson is in support of the campaign.

“As a 'novel food', meaning it's not had a traditional use in our food supply, albeit similar to the conventional counterpart, Vow has submitted an application to the food regulatory authority, Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ), seeking an amendment to the Australia New Zealand Foods Standards Code to approve the use of cultured quail as a food ingredient.”

Concluding that its product is safe for human consumption, Vow has tested its cultured quail which has been thoroughly assessed by food authorities.

“It is now over to FSANZ to conduct its scientific and safety assessment – a public, transparent, and trusted process by the world-class regulatory authority – where all stakeholders can participate in the approval process.”

This exercise has come at a time in which the alternative proteins market is developing in Australia, and the industry is producing more exports, creating jobs, and feeding a growing population.
