Nestlé Explores Animal-Free Dairy Protein Technologies

Nestlé has announced that it is exploring emerging technologies for the development of animal-free dairy protein-based products. The company has invested as consumer demand for nutritious, more environmentally friendly diets has grown over recent years.

A novel product made with animal-free protein from Perfect Day will be piloted through the company’s newly established US R+D Accelerator, bringing it to the US market later this year as a test-and-learn.

The protein, made through precision fermentation, is identical to the whey protein found in cow’s milk, offers good nutritional and functionality benefits suitable for vegans, and is lactose free.

As the world’s largest food and beverage company, Nestlé is exploring animal-friendly alternatives that are nutritious and sustainable, without compromising on taste, flavour, and texture, as a future growth opportunity for the business. The recently created US R+D Accelerator is focused on identifying opportunities and aims to bring highly differentiated product concepts to the market in only six months.

Dairy products remain an important part of Nestlé’s portfolio, though the company continues to explore solutions and technologies to make dairy more climate friendly.
