Supporting Farmers

In February 2024, Fonterra showcased its commitment to supporting farmers by offering complimentary services to enhance farm sustainability and productivity. Among these services, the Co-op's milk quality assistance is a valuable resource for dairy farmers like Chris Luxford from Tokoroa.

Chris, a seasoned dairy farmer with 40 years of experience, encountered challenges with the Somatic Cell Count (SCC) on his farm despite modern facilities. Despite efforts, the SCC remained stubbornly high, impacting productivity and efficiency. Recognising the potential benefits of addressing this issue, Chris sought assistance from Fonterra's Farm Source milk quality team.

Upon engaging with the specialist team, Chris received recommendations tailored to his farm's needs. Implementing suggested changes, such as transitioning to short-acting Dry Cow Therapy and teat sealing all cows, led to remarkable improvements. Within one season, the farm's average SCC plummeted from 195,000 to 110,000, positioning Chris at the pinnacle of success within Fonterra's Co-operative Difference program.

Chris said this support had a transformative impact financially, boosting morale and simplifying farm management. He encouraged fellow farmers to take advantage of Fonterra's resources, highlighting the potential benefits with minimal risk.

Chris Appleby, Fonterra's General Manager of On-Farm Excellence (Milk), underscored the significance of high-quality milk production for the Co-op's success. He said that Fonterra was committed to supporting farmers like Chris in maintaining exceptional standards while acknowledging the role of lowered SCC in improving productivity and reducing emissions intensity.

Beyond milk quality advice, Fonterra offers various complimentary services, including support for sustainable farming practices, digital tools for streamlined farm management, and expert on-farm assistance. This comprehensive support reflects Fonterra's dedication to fostering the success and sustainability of dairy farming communities.
